Part 1:

Salt dough ingredients:

1     cup of flour

1/2  cup of salt

1/4  cup of water

1) Mix together the ingredients to make a dough that you can move and model into different shapes.

2) Sprinkle a little bit of flour on your work surface to make sure the dough does not stick!

Mold the dough into a ball, and then roll it out so it is flat and smooth (about the thickness of a £1 coin).

If you do not have a rolling pin at home or in school, use another object to help you - I found a used jar works really well!

3) Cut the flat dough into tile shapes. you can do this by creating downwards lines, and then line going across.

If you can not use a knife, a ruler or strong piece of card can also work well.

4) Place your Salt Dough tiles on a baking tray (baking paper is optional) and bake for 20 minutes at 180 degrees.

the time may differ depending on the size of our tiles- take them out once they have become hard.

Allow to cool.

You Will Need:

  • Flour

  • Salt

  • Water

  • Baking Tray

  • Paper

  • Paint

  • Cardboard

  • Glue

  • Rolling Pin/Jar

Part 2:

Part 2: Making the frame

5)  Paint the tiles using colour of your choice (I choose different shades of blue).

6) Cut out the frame template - you can use the template on this page or create your own. Trace around the template onto cardboard (this can come from food packaging, for example, cereal box, or any other packaging).

Cut out the cardboard frame.

7) Cover the Frame with Glue and place the tiles onto the frame.

If you want to put grout paste in between the tiles after - leave little spaces between each tile.

8) Leave to dry.

Optional -

9) Mix together 1/2 cup of flour and 2 spoonfuls of salt. Add water and stir until it becomes a smooth paste.

10) Apply paste between the gaps of the tiles. wipe over tiles to get rid of any spilled paste.

Leave to dry for 1-2 days.
